A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Grenada for Mrs. Katie Jo Walton Boone, 89, of Grenada, who died peacefully on Thursday, May 30, in Grenada. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday evening, June 4, at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service. A Rosary will be held immediately following visitation in the Chapel at McKibben and Guinn.
Katie was born on Jan. 20, 1935, in Tillatoba, the daughter of the late Albert and the late Nannie Louise Burke Walton. She attended Oakland High School where she was the valedictorian of her class. Katie married her loving husband, Joe Boone, in 1956, and they would have celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary this June.
Katie was a lifelong believer in Jesus and a devoted wife, mother and friend. She and Joe owned Grenada Hardware, a downtown institution, for many decades. Katie was a faithful member of St. Peter Catholic Church where she taught Sunday school, confirmation classes and served as a Eucharistic Minister. It was very important to Katie to give back to the community where she lived and she was active in many organizations that did so. She was a life member and past president of the Junior Auxiliary of Grenada. Katie also enjoyed traveling, playing golf and was a crackerjack duplicate bridge player, helping to usher many players into the game she loved.
In addition to her parents, her brother, Bobby Franklin Walton, and many wonderful friends, preceded Katie in Heaven.
Survivors include, her husband, Joseph Fillmore Boone Sr.; her daughter, Katherine Boone Phelps, and her husband, Bill, of Houston, Texas; her son, Joey Boone, and his husband, Luis Lopez, of Kissimmee, Fla.; two grandchildren, Boone Phelps and Caroline Phelps and several beloved nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Luis Lopez, David McElwrath, Robert McElwrath, Bill Phelps, Boone Phelps and Tyler Walton. Honorary pallbearers will be Al Walton, Andrew Walton and Terry Walton.
The family wishes to thank the many wonderful caregivers at Providence Assisted Living where Katie and Joe have lived for the past year as well as Adoration Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
