Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024, at Charleston United Methodist Church for James William “J.W.” Turman, 95, who died on Monday, Aug. 19, in Grenada surrounded by his loved ones. Burial followed in Charleston Cemetery. Dr. Ray Branch officiated. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until service time on Thursday, Aug. 22, at the church.
J.W. was born on March 15, 1929, in Paynes, the son of the late Dave Porter Turman Sr. and the late Annie (Topsy) Williams. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and later became the Chancery Clerk of Tallahatchie County for 12 years. Afterwards, he worked for Tallahatchie County Bank until his retirement.
In addition to his parents, his son, Danny Earl Turman; his sister, Annie Wills McNulty, and his brothers, Dave Porter Turman Jr. and Albert Turman, preceded J.W. in death.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Dorothy “Dot” Turman; his daughter, Deborah Ray-Roberts (Ward) of Grenada; four grandchildren, Connie Stammerjohan (Will), Anna Turman, Darby Turman and Hannah Ray and six great grandchildren, William Stammerjohan, Anthony Stammerjohan, Daniel Stammerjohan, Caila Milton, Olivia Plumlee and Nova Jane Stokes.
Pallbearers were Tim Milton, Will Stammerjohan, Darby Turman, Randy Turman, Jim Lewis and Jimmy Fly.
