It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a sweet and precious soul, James Gordon Griffin aka “Griff” or “Coach,” born on Feb. 7, 1934, in Leake County, who left this world peacefully on Friday, Jan. 10, 2025, in Saltillo, following a nine-month stay with his caregivers, Pam, Mike and Kristy.
In honor of Griff’s remarkable life, a memorial service was held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Grenada where his family and friends will gather to celebrate his life and the countless lives he touched. The visitation was held from 11 a.m. until service time on Wednesday, Jan. 15.
Griff lived a life rich in love, wisdom and service, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who had the honor of knowing him. Griff was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.
Coach attended and played basketball at East Central Mississippi Junior College and Mississippi College. After graduating, he dedicated more than three decades to the education and coaching of young minds, inspiring countless students and athletes to strive for excellence both in and out of the classroom. His passion for teaching was matched only by his commitment to coaching where he not only instilled the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship, but also taught invaluable life lessons that shaped the character of many. He was also a retired park ranger at Grenada Lake and never minded joining campers for a meal.
A man of deep faith, Griff was a true Christian, living his life in accordance with the principles he held dear. He served his church community with unwavering dedication, offering guidance and kindness to those around him. Griff’s genuine compassion and ability to listen made him a trusted confidant and a source of comfort for many.
Throughout his life, Griff was surrounded by a close-knit community of family and friends that adored him. He took great joy in family gatherings, sharing stories, laughter and creating memories that will be cherished for generations. He was never one to seek the spotlight, yet his warmth and charisma drew people to him effortlessly. Those who were fortunate to have known him will fondly remember his hearty laughter, wise words and gentle spirit.
In addition to his many roles, Griff enjoyed a variety of hobbies that brought him joy. He was an avid woodworker, creating beautiful pieces that showcased his creativity and craftsmanship. Gardening was another passion — he found peace in nurturing his plants and watching them flourish. He also loved to unwind by watching episodes of “The Andy Griffith Show” and keeping up with the latest news on Fox News, often sharing his insights and opinions with family and friends. Fishing was another hobby — since he always hurt his arm reeling in fish, we had to have a bottle of Tylenol on hand.
The love of his life, Patsy Anne Brown Griffin; his brothers, D.R. Griffin (Bea), John L. Griffin (Lena Pearl), Eddie Griffin (Elaine), Clarence Griffin (Jean) and Bobby Joe Griffin (Carleen) and one sister, Hazel Wright (Bobby), preceded Griff in death.
Survivors include, his wife, Berniece Woods; his children, Pam McCaulla (Mike), Raven Solomon (Darley), Lisa Ray and Jamie Griffin; his grandchildren, Kelly Peters (John), Kristy Bishop (Jeremy), Katy McCaulla (Amy), Pia Solomon and Elin Solomon; his great grandchildren, John McCaulla Peters and Jenna Kate Peters; his stepchildren, Ben Woods and Karen Mclellan, and a multitude of friends who will miss him dearly.
James Gordon Griffin lived a life well-lived, filled with love, laughter and an unwavering commitment to his family, faith and community. His legacy will be carried on through the love he shared and the lives he changed. He will always be remembered as a loving father, a dedicated coach, a passionate teacher and a devoted Christian. Coach will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Emmanuel Baptist Church or a charity of your choice in Griff’s memory.
