Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025, in the Oliver Funeral Home Chapel in Winona for James Elvie “Pap” Ballard, 84, of Madison, formerly of Winona, who died on Saturday, Jan. 18, in Canton after a long battle with dementia. His family was with him until his last moments. Burial followed in Winona Garden of Memory. The Rev. Ed McDaniel and the Rev. Terry Corley officiated. Visitation was held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Oliver Funeral Home and from 1 p.m. until service time on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Oliver Funeral Home.
James was born on Dec. 15, 1940, in Kilmichael, the son of the late Elvie and the late Juanita Ballard. He was a member of North Winona Baptist Church in Winona, while his family lived there.
In addition to his parents, one sister, Barbara Brewer, preceded James in death.
Survivors include, his wife of 62 years, Shirley Ballard; his two children, Michael Ballard (Regina) and Shaunna Ballard Bridges (Kevin); one sister, Sue Cade of West; three grandchildren and five step grandchildren.
