Graveside services were held on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, in the Gore Springs Cemetery for Mr. Herbert Lawrence Litten, 89, of Grenada, who died on Monday, April 17, at his residence. The Rev. Aaron Chapman officiated.
Lawrence was born on Sept. 14, 1933, in Grenada, the son of the late Everett Calvin and the late Kate Ione Connor Litten. He honorably served our country in the United States Navy as a Navy SEAL during the Korean War. He was deeply committed to the Boy Scouts of America having attained the honor of Eagle Scout and he was also inducted into the Order of the Arrow. He enjoyed working as an electrician for many years and later owned and operated Litten’s Grocery for more than 27 years.
Lawrence thoroughly enjoyed studying history and genealogy and was a member of the Yalobusha County Historical Society and the Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp. He was honored to have served as chaplain of both organizations. He enjoyed fishing in his spare time and was a gifted storyteller, who always could put those in his presence at ease. Lawrence was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and enjoyed attending and worshiping with fellow believers. While his passing leaves a hole in the hearts of those who loved him, they find comfort in knowing he is at peace and at home with his Savior.
In addition to his parents, nine siblings preceded Lawrence in death.
Survivors include, his wife of 66 years, Betty Litten; daughter, Lois Gaskin (Don) of Grenada; son, Lawrence Litten Jr. (Cindy) of Grenada and three grandchildren, Anna Gaskin, Laura Gaskin and Kristin Christmas.
Johnny Chamblee, Fred Dunn, Andy Fly, Carl Morris, Phillip Penn and Larry Ralston honored Lawrence by serving as pallbearers and carried him to rest in the Gore Springs Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Calvary Baptist Church or Hebron Baptist Church.
