A 75-year-old Grenada resident is lucky to be alive after thunderstorms with high winds caused severe damage to her West Pecan Street home earlier this week.
Ellen McMullen has lived at her residence located at 23 W. Pecan St. for the last eight years. Around 9 p.m. Monday, she had just walked out of her bedroom when she heard a loud crack and a huge oak tree slammed through the bedroom side of the house.
“You could hear the wind out there – it was really bad,” she said. “I had just walked out of the bedroom and was in the hallway. There was a loud crack and the tree came through my bedroom. The Lord was definitely with me.”
The American Red Cross is helping house McMullen in a local hotel for the next couple of days before she is able to move into a house on Mound Street. It is unknown how long it will take to repair her Pecan Street home.
With housing secure, McMullen is still in need of necessities. She is looking for a bed, along with clothing. Her sizes are 18 tall pants, 2 XL blouses, 38D bra and size 10 under garments. You can drop off donations at The Grenada Star office located at 355 W. Monroe St., between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
For those interested in further helping McMullen, you can call her (662) 688-5035.
