The Grenada Police Department remained on the scene until just after 3 p.m. Friday investigating an afternoon death in a residential area on the south end of the city.
According to Assistant Police Chief Maj. George Douglas, officers were called to the 300 block of Jones Road shortly after noon in connection to a report of a deceased person in a house. Douglas would not specify the cause of death, however, stated that the deceased was a young black male.
The Grenada County Sheriff’s Department assisted the GPD at the scene. As protocol, Grenada County Coroner Doug Yates and Deputy Coroner Jo Morman were also called to the scene. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation arrived at the scene just before 3 p.m.
Dozens of onlookers, many of them family members, gathered at the scene to mourn the deceased. A mother who pulled onto Jones Road from South Commerce Street confirmed that the local daycare facility, which sits a block away from the scene, was on temporary lockdown as a precaution.
Douglas said more information will become available as the preliminary investigation continues.
It is unknown whether there have been any arrests made.
If you have any information regarding this case, Douglas requests you call (662) 227-TIPS (8477).
