Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 28, 2025, in the chapel at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service in Grenada for Mr. George Convel Lane, 90, of Grenada, who died on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at his residence. Burial followed in Grenada Memorial Garden. Dr. Brent Barker officiated. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service on Friday, Nov. 28, at the funeral home.
George was born on Dec. 8, 1934, in Rosebloom, the son of the late Edna Carpenter Lane and the late George Jenkins Lane. He attended school in Cascilla and was blessed to live the great majority of his life in Grenada near close family and friends. He married Janie Thomas of Grenada and they were devoted to one another for 58 years until her death in 2011.
George joined the Mississippi National Guard while employed at McQuay International in Grenada, followed by Bryan Foods in West Point. In 1979, George founded Lane Wholesale Meat Distributors, a family-owned business operating out of Grenada until his retirement.
Following retirement, George and Janie traveled extensively with church friends and family members, and they regularly visited Branson, Mo., for musical entertainment. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and savored family-centered Christmas gatherings. He was known for his love of holiday get-togethers and continued to execute elaborate decorations and traditional meals for major holidays up until his death. He was also a spirited Rook partner and never missed a good-hearted opportunity for a game of chance, fun and fellowship.
George will be greatly missed and remembered for his extensive carpentry, cooking, gardening, artistry, mechanical and handyman skills that he shared with many throughout his life. His ability to create and fix most anything had earned him the well-deserved title of “Mr. Goodwrench.”
In addition to his parents and his wife, his brother, Henry Lane (Verna); his sisters, Corrine Arendale (W.H.) and Luella Lane; his son-in-law, Garvin “Leo” Deshler, and a nephew, Billy Lane, preceded George in death.
Survivors include, his two daughters, Debra Deshler (Terry Jeffcoat) of Eupora and Cindy Dishongh of Brandon; son-in-law, Dr. Randy Dishongh of Brandon; grandson, Scott Deshler of Oxford; sister-in-law, Margie Tribble of Grenada; nieces, Pat Arendale of Atlanta, Ga., and Peggy Tillman of Madison; nephews, Purvis Lane and Terry West, both of Grenada, and Hamp Arendale of Florida.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Emmanuel Baptist Church, P.O. Box 908, Grenada, MS 38902 or to the charity of your choice.
