Wednesday was busy for the Grenada County Sheriff’s Office.
Shortly after announcing a successful search warrant with assistance from state agents and neighboring law enforcement officers, deputies responded to a call of shots fired that resulted in one person being injured.
According to Grenada County Sheriff Garrett Hartley, the shooting took place on Louisiana Avenue in the McCain Estates subdivision just off Hwy. 51 South. He said a male was shot in the leg during the incident.
“It’s not connected to the shootings the city has been having,” Sheriff Hartley said.
Some reports indicated that another shooting had occurred in Grenada, causing confusion.
Grenada Police Department officers were busy early last week dealing with multiple shots fired reports including five confirmed shootings that left one person dead and seven others, including a 9-year-old girl, injured.
Shootings began in the early morning hours on Sunday, Jan. 28, and rang out again Monday night, Jan. 29, putting law enforcement officers and residents on high alert. Multiple reports of shots fired continued throughout the week as the Grenada Police Department patrolled heavily.
In the first of the Sunday shootings, 36-year-old Charles Santez Coffey was shot and killed. One person was injured in each of the second, third and fourth shootings, while four others were injured in the fifth shooting on North Lynch Street.
No arrest has been made in Wednesday night’s shooting in Grenada County, which remains under investigation. No arrests have been made in the city shootings either.
GCSO investigators and deputies, assisted by the Yalobusha Sheriff’s Office and state agents, recovered numerous stolen items, firearms and drug paraphernalia in Wednesday’s search warrant on Fawn Lake Road.
According to GCSO reports, one subject was present at the residence at the time of the execution of the warrant and was arrested on an outstanding warrant without incident.
“We would like to commend proactive work on the part of our deputies and investigators as well as assistance from other agencies,” Sheriff Hartley said. “We greatly appreciate all information from the public concerning illegal activities in their communities.”
The investigation in the case is ongoing and more charges and arrests are forthcoming for parties involved, Sheriff Hartley concluded.
