Fernando “Fred” Brown was born on May 25, 1954, in Grenada, the son of the late A.Z. Brown and the late Allean Thompson. The second oldest of eight siblings, he was raised on Cherry Street by his beloved and revered grandmother, Ms. Matty E. Money. She instilled in him Christian values, the importance of family, and a love for cooking and pets. As a child, Fernando adored his black dog, Flenice. Family and friends closest to Fernando would describe him as having a lively personality, infectious laugh and enthusiasm to celebrate life.
Fernando’s passion for civil rights advocacy and gospel music defined his youth. As a teenager, he was listed in the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission files under the Black Youth Group for standing up against racism and segregation. At New Hope Baptist Church in Grenada, he led the Young Adult Choir, playing multiple instruments including, trumpet and piano. He became a standout trumpet player in Carrie Dotson High School’s renowned marching band. After graduating high school in 1972, he attended Jackson State, Mississippi Valley State and Malcolm X University in Chicago, Ill.
On June 8, 1974, Fernando married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy M. Brown, in Grenada. The very next day, they relocated to San Diego, Calif. Their union was blessed with one child, Fernando D. Brown II, who was born in San Diego, Calif.
Fernando’s early years in San Diego, Calif., were marked by meaningful connections including, lifelong relationships formed during his first job at Jack in the Box in Linda Vista. Many who worked with him have described him as the consummate professional. Fernando was gifted in many areas including, math, which enabled him to become a successful traveling auditor for Payless ShoeSource. At the turn of the century, he earned his California Real Estate license.
Over the last decade, Fernando found a new home in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he created new memories during the Golden Years of his life. He became an integral part of the YMCA, forming close bonds with colleagues and community members over eight wonderful years. While he always considered San Diego, Calif., home, he came to appreciate Colorado’s unpredictable weather and would often send pictures of the snow and wildlife to his loved ones.
In addition to his parents, A.Z. Brown and Allean Thompson, his brother, Clyde Thompson Jr., preceded Fernando in death.
On Saturday, Dec. 28, 2024, Fernando transitioned to be with the Lord. He is survived by his devoted son, Fernando D. Brown II; daughter-in-law, Lauren Brown, and his two cherished grandchildren, Siena and Sydney. He also leaves behind his former spouse, Dorothy M. Brown; his Uncle Rogers (Dot); siblings, Mario, Cassandra (John), Sharmane, Marjorie, David and Frederica and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Fernando’s life exemplified love, resilience and connection, inspiring us all with his generous spirit, unwavering faith and dedication to family and community. He leaves a legacy of kindness, strength, compassion, laughter and cherished memories.
