After an extensive search, Grenada city officials didn’t have to look any further than their own backyard to find its next City Manager.
Grenada native Dr. Trina N. George was hired Tuesday night following the continuance of a recessed Special-Called Council Meeting from last Thursday, which was also recessed from Monday. George’s hiring was made official after a 6-1 vote following Executive Session, which was entered to discuss the personnel matter. Ward 1 City Councilman Warren B. Cox was the lone no vote.
Dr. George, who replaces Stanford Amos and will be paid $125,000 annually, is no stranger to the City of Grenada. In year’s past, she has served as interim city manager and director of personnel. She rejoins the city after years as a federal employee. In 2009, Dr. George was appointed director for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development in Mississippi. In 2022, she was again selected to serve in the same role under the Biden Administration.
Dr. George earned her bachelor’s degree from Mississippi Valley State University, a master’s degree from Mississippi State University and a PhD in public policy and administration from Walden University. Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Executive Education granted her a specialized certification in Creating Collaborative Solutions: Innovations in Governance.
Dr. George began her career in public service in the non-profit industry, working with statewide youth programs, healthcare projects and GED programs. After working for more than 15 years in U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson’s (D-Miss.) office, she was named the first African American woman to serve as state director for Rural Development.
Dr. George’s first day on the job will be this Monday, March 3.
