Sponsoring a Leo Club provides Lions Club members with opportunities to mentor and empower young leaders, while fostering a commitment to community service. Through involvement with a Leo club, Lions can energize and inspire members and even increase the sponsoring club’s community exposure, attracting potential members such as young professionals, student, parents and families.
This is a project that the Grenada Lions Club has decided to pursue. I have talked with other clubs in our state that have started Leo Clubs and am committed to do the same right here in Grenada. It is inspiring to see and hear stories of the younger generation working together to serve and help those in their communities and I would like to see that happen right here in our community. The Grenada Lions Club is in the process of getting flyers together to distribute to area schools, churches, businesses and such to see if there is enough interest in our town to get a Grenada Leo Club started.
There are two types of Leo Clubs and the one for children 12- to 18-year-olds is the one we are looking to start in Grenada. It is my hope that we will have enough students interested to get the ball rolling in the next few months. If you know of anyone interested, please tell them to look for the flyer at their school or church, and if they don’t find one there to come by Criss Office Supply to pick one up. Once we get enough potential names, we will plan to have an informational meeting where we will explain the philosophy of the Leo Club Program and also answer the questions concerning the requirements for membership, the relationship to the sponsoring Grenada Lions Club and Leo service activities. We will probably have our first meeting at some local eatery where we can have the three key ingredients: food, friends and fun.
The Grenada Lions Club also sponsors students to attend the Lions Leadership Camps. The girls camp will be held March 10-12 and the boys will be held March 17-19. The best news is that this year the camp will be held in Louisville at the beautiful Lake Tiak-O’Khata. This is a wonderful leadership experience for students in the 10th, 11th or 12th grade, who are already leaders, but those who are potential leaders as well.
I also just recently found out that the North Mississippi concert of the Lions All-State Band will be at the Ford Center at Ole Miss in Oxford. More information on the band will follow in the upcoming weeks.
We still have our pecans available at Cadence, Corporate Regions and Renasant Banks in Grenada as well as Square Market, Criss Office Supply, Duck Hill Hardware, 333 Restaurant, The Grenada Star, Scott Petroleum in Vaiden, Regions Bank in Duck Hill, Bank of Kilmichael in Winona and Renasant Bank in Winona. We have plenty of the chocolate-covered pecans that will be perfect for your Valentine sweetheart.
As always, we can use more people dedicated to serving others. Our Lions meet twice a month on Wednesdays at noon for lunch at Orleans Bistro. It’s a great way to serve others in your community. Please check us out and like us on Facebook and visit our website at e-clubhouse.org/sites/grenada/
