Numerous social media posts and various rumors circulating around town regarding the restoration of water services throughout a large part of the City of Grenada are just that – rumors.
According to Grenada Water/Sewer Department Interim Superintendent Fred Chapman an exact timeframe for water to flow again has not been established despite several times circulating throughout the city.
“I hope to have it on today, but it’s hard to call,” he said this morning at the scene of the water main break just south of the Green Street water well. “This is one of worst – that I recall – we’ve had as far as main breaks.”
Chapman said that a 10-inch water main busted near the Green Street well behind the City of Grenada Police Department at approximately midnight. Water service throughout the “old part” of the city including areas such as Avenue of Pines, business and homes along Monroe Street, parts of Carrollton Road including Kirk Academy, the area surrounding Grenada High School and Grenada Middle School among others are currently without water service.
“They found it, but they have to get the water off of it to get down to it,” Chapman said.

In addition to the Green Street well, the Bryant Street well is also shut down.
“One of the reasons that we have it off is to try to get the water off the line so we can fix it,” Chapman said.
As for how long it will take to repair the line, Chapman said just before 10 a.m. that it is unclear until the damage is assessed.
“If it’s a straight run, we may be alright, but it could be an L or something,” he concluded.
The Grenada County Courthouse and Grenada City Hall have also been closed. GHS and GMS will dismiss at 10:30 a.m.
Once water has been restored, a boil water notice will begin and continue until clear samples are received from the Mississippi State Department of Health. City officials will keep customers informed through its text messaging system and The Star.
