Bells are ringing, but children are not singing, as schools have started throughout Grenada County, putting an end to summer.
Classes began last Thursday for Grenada School District and last Friday for Kirk Academy. This week marks the first full week of classes for both systems, and teachers and administrators alike eagerly await what the year will bring.
Kirk Academy Head of School Jay Watts is ready to return to the routine of the school year.
“We’re looking forward to the new year, we’ve got an outstanding group of students here,” he said. “We’re excited to get everything started.”
Students at Kirk Academy are quickly adapting to the introduction of Chromebooks and new elective opportunities. Additionally, the school has implemented stricter security measures to help ensure student safety.

The year has started off on a similar note at Grenada School District, according to Superintendent David Daigneault.
“We’ve had an incredible start to the school year,” he said. “The students have been terrific and our staff has been extremely well prepared, as have our administrators. They’ve been focused on educating the kids from the get-go; we were in the classrooms doing work from the first day.”
At Grenada High School, students are adjusting to the new block scheduling system. Students now only meet in four classes per day, staying in each for an hour and a half and finishing their courses in one semester.
“There’s been a very positive response to the block schedule from students and staff alike,” Daigneault concluded. “Everyone was excited to start learning to navigate something new and a little different.”
