Grenada’s traditional trick-or-treat night will take place a day earlier than Halloween this year. City officials announced during this month’s City Council meeting held on Monday, Oct. 13, that youngsters can make their candy rounds from 5 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, instead of Friday, Oct. 31.
The decision follows the city’s long-standing practice of shifting trick-or-treating when Halloween falls on a Friday night, largely to avoid conflicts with local high school football games. With both high schools in Grenada County and those located in surrounding counties set to host or travel to games on Oct. 31, city officials said holding trick-or-treating a day earlier helps keep the streets clearer and ensures families and fans can safely enjoy both events.
Residents are encouraged to plan for the change and to stay mindful of safety as children take to sidewalks and neighborhoods across town. Police and fire officials will have extra patrols in residential areas and ask motorists to stay alert for pedestrian traffic, especially during the evening hours.
Parents and guardians are urged to accompany younger children and inspect candy before it is eaten. Flashlights, glow sticks and reflective clothing can help trick-or-treaters stay visible after dark. City leaders also reminded families that children should walk on sidewalks whenever possible, cross only at intersections and crosswalks and avoid cutting through yards or alleys. Costume masks should allow clear vision and props such as swords or wands should be flexible rather than rigid to prevent injury.
Homeowners wishing to hand out candy are asked to keep entryways well-lit and free from trip hazards like cords or decorations. Pets should be secured indoors or away from doorways to avoid startling guests. Those not participating are encouraged to leave porch lights off as a signal to trick-or-treaters to skip that home.
