Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025, at First Methodist Church in Grenada for longtime educator Mrs. Carol Elaine Cardinell Poovey, 78, of Grenada, who died on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2024, at her residence. Burial followed in the Poovey family plot in Oddfellows Cemetery in Grenada. The Rev. Daniel Herring officiated. The family received friends from 9 a.m. until service time on Saturday, Jan. 4, at the church.
Carol was born on Sept. 23, 1946, in Greenwood, the daughter of the late Terrance Hicks and the late Estelle Nunley Cardinell. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Delta State University where she also was a founding member of the Phi Mu Sorority. She was an active member of First Methodist Church in Grenada and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Carol was a life member of the Grenada Junior Auxiliary and was honored as the Woman of Distinction in 2012.
Survivors include, her husband, Phil Poovey Jr.; two daughters, Katelyn Poovey Knox of Jefferson City, Mo., and Phyllis Courtenay Poovey (Jonathan McCardle) of Brandon; two grandchildren, Emily Catherine Knox and Philip Faxon Knox, and a sister-in-law, Lamar Poovey Chustz.
Jonathan McCardle, David McElwrath, Robert McElwrath, Ramon Pierce, Glenn Young and Rish Young honored Carol by serving as pallbearers and carried her to rest in Oddfellows Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to First Methodist Church Grenada or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
