Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025, at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service in Grenada for Mrs. Bessie Spence Lancaster, 96, of Grenada, who died on Tuesday, Feb. 11, in Grenada. Burial followed in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The Rev. J. Barry Worrell officiated.
Bessie was born on March 31, 1928, in Grenada County, the daughter of the late Sam Austin and the late Ada Harbin Harris. She was a devoted member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for many years. A voracious gardener, she loved tending to her yard and growing beautiful flowers. Above all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, her husbands, Dennie Spence and J.L. Lancaster; one sister, Virginia Estes, and her brothers, Sam Harris Jr. and Howard Harris, preceded Bessie in death.
Survivors include, her son, Keith Spence (Barbara) of Grenada; one sister, Ledar Vance (E.B.) of Grenada; three grandchildren, Kim Daly, Elizabeth Taylor and Dennie Spence, and five great grandchildren.
Terry Bailey, Jacob Bennett, Todd Hood, Jake Miller, Dennie Spence and Wesley Taylor honored Mrs. Lancaster by serving as pallbearers and carried her to rest in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
