Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025, at Poplar Springs Church near Kilmichael for Alton Glynn Downs, 87, of Vaiden, who died on Monday, Jan. 27, at his residence. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The Rev. Tony Black officiated. Visitation was held from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Oliver Funeral Home of Winona and from 1 p.m. until service time on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Poplar Springs Church.
Mr. Downs was born on Oct. 4, 1937, in Vaiden, the son of the late Stephens and the late Agnes Ramage Downs. He was a retired welder for Screw Conveyor Corporation in Winona for more than 40 years, a United States Army veteran and a member of the VFW Grenada post.
In addition to his parents, two brothers, James “Tody” Downs and Grady Earnest Downs, preceded Mr. Downs in death.
Survivors include, his two sons, James Stephen Downs of Vicksburg and Michael Edward Downs of Cleveland; one brother, Ricky Downs of Vaiden; two grandchildren, Chris Downs of Louisiana and Courtney Beck of Vicksburg; one great grandchild, Nick Martin, and several nieces and
nephews.
Pallbearers were Philip Beck, Steve Powers, Corley Thompson, Durward Stanton, Bill Rhine and Billy Joe Ferguson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed in Mr. Downs’ honor to Poplar Springs Cemetery Fund c/o Lane Greenlee, 709 Ridge Rd., Kilmichael, MS 39747.
