Graveside services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025, in Grenada Memorial Garden for Mr. Rex Alvin Chandler, 81, of Grenada, who died on Sunday, Feb. 23, at his residence. Bro. Ken Salley officiated. The family received friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service in Grenada.
Rex was born on Nov. 16, 1943, in Vardaman, the son of the late Alvin Francis Chandler and the late Edith Sykes Chandler of Calhoun City. He worked for Kellwood for many years. After his retirement, he started his second career at John Richard in Greenwood.
Rex was passionate about many things including, deer hunting, crappie fishing, sewing machine repairs and gardening. He loved the Ole Miss Rebels and enjoyed tailgating with friends and family, and attending football games at Vaught Hemingway Stadium. One of his favorite memories was going to Dallas in 2009, to see the Rebels beat Texas Tech in the last Cotton Bowl held in Cotton Bowl Stadium. Even though he couldn’t attend sporting events later in life, you could find him sitting by the radio listening to David Kellum and cheering on the Rebels in every sport.
More than anything, Rex loved his wife of 59 years, Susie. They had a wonderful life together and made friends and family always feel welcome at their home, whether they lived in Alabama or Mississippi. They were always willing to fry up some fish, make a fresh pan of cornbread, host a family Thanksgiving gathering or just welcome you in for a glass of tea and good conversation. Rex lovingly referred to her as “my girl” and doted on her endlessly until her passing in 2021.
In addition to his parents and his wife, one brother, Jessie Chandler of Lobelville, Tenn., preceded Rex in death.
Survivors include, his son, Mike Chandler (Pam) of Oxford; sister, Carolyn Valent of Hermitage, Tenn.; one brother Curtis Chandler of Shelbyville, Ken.; and two grandchildren, Mallory Chandler McCormack (Cody) of Huntsville, Ala., and Phillip Chandler.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
