The polls are now open for the 2024 City of Grenada Municipal Election.
The 13 candidates – including three for mayor – that qualified for this four-year cycle are making their final campaign stops as they continue to knock on doors gathering up support for the Monday, May 6 election. There are no runoffs in Grenada’s Municipal Election, so the candidate with the most votes after the ballots are certified will be declared the winner.
Candidates on the ballot for mayor include John Goldwater, Gary Edwin Jenkins and Charles Latham. Longtime Mayor Billy F. Collins announced in late November 2023 that he would not seek re-election.
Ward 5 Councilman Eric D. Harris is the only incumbent facing opposition. John “Bubba” Caffey will be on the ballot against him.
Current Ward 6 Councilman Larry Vance also chose not to seek re-election, leaving his seat up for grabs. Lori Chavis, Tim Coleman and Ben Smith are running for the open seat.
Councilmen Warren B. Cox (Ward 1), Fredreick “Pete” Wilson (Ward 2), Lewis Johnson (Ward 3), Michael Smith (Ward 4) and Ronald J. Merriman (Ward 7) are all five running unopposed.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. They include:
• Ward 1, Fire Station #2, 90 Kirk St.
• Ward 2, Rayford-Allen Building, 10 Rayford Allen Dr.
• Ward 3, Taylor Hall, 670 Butler St.
• Ward 4, City Hall Council Room, 108 S. Main St.
• Ward 5, City Auditorium, 17 N. Main St.
• Ward 6, Southside Church of Christ Family Life Center, 3499 Commerce St.
• Ward 7, Grenada County Emergency Operations Center, 370 Van Dorn St. (next door to fire station)
Earlier this month, the Greater Grenada Partnership and The Grenada Star, along with Edward Jones-Keith Bloodworth, held a Meet the Candidate event for the three mayoral candidates at First & Green Event Venue in Downtown Grenada. Each candidate had an opportunity to answer a variety of questions.
