A Celebration of Life Service was held at 3 p.m. on Monday, July 8, 2024, at Mortimer National Funeral Home in Grenada for Yola Joy Spence Bailey, 94, who died on Wednesday, July 3, after a brief illness, joining the saints who had gone on before her. Visitation was held from 1 p.m. until service time on Monday, July 8, at Mortimer National. The family’s beloved friend, the Rev. Jimmy Hood, officiated.
Miss Yola, as she was affectionately known, was born on May 6, 1930. For most of her 94 years, she lived in Grenada within a mile of where she was born in Futheyville. At the time of her death, she was living in Enterprise, Ala.
Over the course of her life, Miss Yola was a factory worker, retail worker, childcare worker and a homemaker. Upon the death of her husband, she served out his term as the Tax Assessor/Collector for Grenada County. Miss Yola took delight in her flower garden and was a member of the Iris Club. As a devout Christian, she served in numerous positions in her church. For more than 25 years, she was the church clerk at Hebron Baptist Church. Miss Yola was always ready to step up to meet the needs of her family and friends.
Her parents, Allie and Hazel Spence; her husband of many years, Wade Bailey; her daughter-in-law, Terri Whitworth Bailey, and her precious grandson, Samuel Kent Bailey, preceded Miss Yola in death.
Survivors include, her son, Terry Wade Bailey of Spanish Fort, Ala.; her daughter, Jerre Bailey Simmons (Billy) of Enterprise, Ala.; two grandchildren, Brittany Dasinger (Jacob) and Steven Simmons (Beth); granddaughter-in-law, Halley Bailey; three great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Oh Lord, remember Thy servant who has fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and everlasting life and make her memory eternal.
Until we meet again may you peacefully rest in the arms of our almighty God in Heaven.
