Born on July 26, 1929, in Memphis, Tenn., Joe was the son of the late Lemuel D. and the late Clara McWilliams Boone. When he was three, the family moved to Grenada where he would grow deep roots in the community.
Joe graduated from John Rundle High School where he was the star fullback on the football team. He went on to attend the University of Mississippi where he was a proud member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. After his time at Ole Miss, he served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps.
Shortly after returning from service, Joe met the love of his life, Katie Walton. They married and spent nearly 68 wonderful years together. Together, they owned and operated Grenada Hardware, a downtown institution that served the community for many decades. Joe was known for his generosity, often helping those in need, even at personal loss.
A devout Catholic, Joe was a founding member of St. Peter Catholic Church where he was actively involved throughout his life. His commitment to the community extended beyond his faith; he served on the Grenada County School Board and held leadership positions in several local men’s clubs.
In his spare time, Joe enjoyed playing golf, a sport he was passionate about, and was a devoted fan of the Ole Miss Rebels football team. His love for his family, faith and community was evident in all aspects of his life.
In addition to his parents, his wife, Katie Walton Boone, and his two brothers, L.D. Boone Jr. and Owen James Boone, preceded Joe in death.
Survivors include, his daughter, Katherine Boone Phelps, and her husband, Bill, of Houston, Texas; his son, Joey Boone, and his husband, Luis Lopez, of Kissimmee, Fla.; and his two cherished grandchildren, Boone Phelps and Caroline Phelps. He also leaves behind beloved nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews, all of whom he treasured.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Walton, Terry Walton, David McElwrath, Lee Boone, Boone Phelps, Luis Lopez and Bill Phelps. Honorary pallbearer will be Tommy Hudson.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the many wonderful caregivers at Providence Assisted Living and Adoration Hospice for the compassionate care and support they provided to Joe.
