Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 14, 2023, in the Mortimer National Funeral Home Chapel in Grenada for James Edward Smith, 96, of Grenada, who died on Sunday, July 9, at his residence. Burial followed in Grenada Memorial Gardens. Visitation was held from 1 p.m. until service time on Friday, July 14, at Mortimer National Funeral Home.
James was born on Sept. 23, 1926, in Friar’s Point, the son of the late Oakley B. Smith and the late Gussie Marcus Smith. After graduating from high school, he joined the United States Navy. He was employed by the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier. He would serve as a substitute carrier when needed, so he ended up delivering mail to just about every house in Grenada.
James was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church in Grenada. He had a lifelong love of horses. He also enjoyed watermelon and homemade ice cream. James loved to sing and he also took great pride in keeping his yard neat and well groomed.
In addition to his parents, his wife, Vivian Smith; one sister, Evelyn Collins; and his brothers, Benny Smith, Willard Smith and Robert Smith, preceded James in death.
Survivors include, his daughters, Larraine Love and Martha Thomas, both of Grenada and Angela Robinson and her husband, Mike, of Oakland; his son, Vance Smith and his wife, Janice, of Grenada; two sisters, Vondell Lindsey and her husband, Morris, who was more like a brother to James, and Betty Dearman, all of Greenville; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and a third one on the way.
