Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2025, at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service in Grenada for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Scarbrough Ayers, 83, of Gore Springs, who died on Saturday, March 1, at her residence. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday, March 7, at McKibben and Guinn.
Mary was born on Dec. 6, 1941, in Yazoo City, the daughter of the late Henry Bardie Sr. and the late Ruby Josephine Taylor Scarbrough. She attended Mississippi State College for Women and later spent 20 years as an employee of Mississippi Power & Light — now Entergy. Following her retirement from Entergy, she was the manager of the AT&T retail store in Grenada for several years.
A two-time breast cancer survivor, Mary enjoyed crafting and yard work, and was also a very skilled artist. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Richard Tyler Ayers; two sisters, Sharla Jo Collins and Betty Jean Hanks, and a nephew, Barry Hanks, preceded Mary in death.
Survivors include, her son, Greg Ayers (Jennifer) of Russellville, Ala.; one sister, Janice Drennan of Leesburg, Fla.; brother, Bardie Scarbrough of Leesburg, Fla.; two grandchildren, Nicole Ayers and Tyler Ayers and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend sincere appreciation to the staff of Adoration Hospice for the exceptional care provided to Mary in her last days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
