It was a productive night last Monday night for both the Grenada High School Freshmen and Grenada High School junior varsity games against Oxford High School in games at Bobby Holcombe Field. The Freshmen Chargers used a pair of rushing touchdowns from McCaleb Taylor and a scoring pass from Holt Gober to Chance Jenkins as Grenada won a 20-12 decision.
The junior varsity Chargers came up on the short end of a 20-16 decision against the Chargers from Lafayette County.
“I’m proud the way the kids played and their effort,” GHS freshmen Coach Justin Purvis said. “They are still learning what it takes to disciplined and accountable and to play hard every snap.”
Gober finished the day 7 of 12 for 125 yards through the air. Jenkins finished the night with 4 catches for 106 yards. Richard Smith had a reception for 10 yards and Jakary Shipp had a catch for six yards.
McCaleb Taylor was the leading rusher with 125 yards on 10 carries. Jarquis Perry finished with 75 yards on eight carries.
Defensively, Zak Townes led the way with nine total tackles followed by Taylor with eight stops. Perry finished with seven tackles. Jacorey Seals chipped in four tackles and an interception. Preston Downs had for tackles.
In the junior varsity contest, DruDarius Barnes was 8 of 12 for 150 yards and two touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions. Jayvon Herron finished with four catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Shane Rosenthall finished with two catches including one for a two-point conversion. Thomas Kuhn had two catches for 15 yards.
On the defensive side, Jdeion Wrenn and Martvevion Austin each finished with an interception. Willie Pullie and Brad Deloach were the top tacklers. Other standouts for the defensive side were Harayvon Willis, Tyler Wilson, Ty Bland, Keith Jewell, A.J. Mitchell, Nydarius Medcalfe, Keith Jewell and Jekerious Williams.
The freshmen Chargers travel to Tupelo Monday A junior varsity contest with Tupelo will follow. Results were not available.
