It was a tale of two halves during last Tuesday’s Kirk Academy-Marshall Academy Class AAAA, District 1 contest held at Kirk.
In the first half, the Raiderettes relied on some solid defensive play in building a 17-9 lead at intermission. The second half saw the Raiders struggle offensively, but still finding a way to win a 30-24 decision.
With the win, Kirk improves to 16-4 overall and 5-1 inside District 1.
In the nightcap, the Raiders had a chance to tie Marshall down the stretch but came up short dropping a 51-48 decision.
The Raiders are now 1-12 overall and 1-5 inside the district.
“I thought our defense was solid in the first half,” coach Robin Chastain said. “We were able to generate some points off turnovers. In the second, we couldn’t get anything to go in the bucket. But, I was proud we were able to find a way to win.”
Molly Lane led Kirk with nine points. Sophie Brister scored eight points. Lexie Draper had five points. Abby Grace Campbell and Abby Beissel scored four points each.
In the boys game, the Raiders and Patriots went back-and-forth at each other for four periods. Marshall led 41-40 after three periods and went on to a 51-48 victory.
A.J. Wren led Kirk with 18 points and Taylor Leverette had 13 points. Theron Hubbard had eight points and Lane Goss finished with six points. Chris Bradford and Hudson Mattox both scored three points.
Junior Varsity
The junior Raiderettes cruised to a 36-15 win over the Lady Patriots behind 18 points from Charley Rose. Mary Elise James scored six points. Camryn Allbritton and Cecile Brister each scored four points.
The junior Raiders lost a 35-26 decision to Marshall.
Anthony Carollo led Kirk with nine points. Andy Redwine and Landon Rice scored scored four points and Noah Jackson finished with three. Linton Carson, Caymen Gregg and Tyler Schraenkler all scored two points.
