In the second quarter of last Tuesday’s home game with Lewisburg High School, the Grenada Chargers were facing a 38-20 deficit to the Class 6A Patriots. From that point on, GHS scored and scored often – cruising to a 90-69 victory. It was the first of a three-game week for the GHS teams. They hosted Charleston Thursday winning 57-22 in girls and 71-30 in boys and closed the week at the Premier Medical Group Tournament in Kosciusko. The boys won a 65-47 decision over West Lauderdale, while the girls lost a 48-36 decision to Kosciusko.
Grenada opened the second half with a 31-8 run to blow the game open. The run was highlighted by nine three-pointers.
The offensive story of the night for the Chargers was the play of junior guard Kelton Jones and senior guard Cameo Noel. Jones paced all scorers with a game-high 31 points on 12-of-18 shooting from the field, including 7-of-11 from the three-point line. Noel finished 9-of-15 from the field for 24 points on the night. Senior guard Donte Calhoun had 12 points and junior guard Jekerious Williams finished with eight points.
Girls
The Lady Chargers led 13-3 with 1:50 left in the opening quarter only to see Lewisburg cut the margin to 17-11 at the end of the quarter. Senior center Kelsey Federick opened the second quarter with consecutive baskets to put GHS up 21-11. Federick put together a 14-point, six rebounds and three-block performance despite not bring 100 percent due to sickness.
“Kelsey was amazing,” head coach Kendrick Conley said. “She wasn’t at full strength and gave us an outstanding night both offensively and defensively.”
Lewisburg (2-2) rallied to close the gap to 29-25 at halftime. Grenada opened the third period with an 11-0 run to build a 43-27 lead with 2:40 left in the quarter. The Lady Chargers used a three-pointer by junior guard Katelyn Leavy to lead 48-30 advantage at the end of the third quarter of action.
The Lady Patriots got as close as eight on two different occasions before Grenada pulled away at the end.
Leavy led all scorers with 21 points and 11 rebounds. She also had four steals, five assists and a block. Freshman center Carlei Brown scored 13 points and five rebounds.
Charleston
Harges had another big night against the Lady Tigers with 19 points, three steals and three assists. Federick scored 12 points, pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to go with three blocks. Brown scored eight points and had five rebounds.
In the boys game, Grenada had a 45-13 lead at halftime. A total of 13 players scored in the contest. Led by Jones with 14 points and Calhoun with 10 points.
Antonio Scott, Martrevion Austin and Noel all had six points. Jarques Perry and Zach Townsend both had five points. Townes and Williams each scored four points, while Joshua Hughes and Dru Barnes had three points apiece. Shane Rosenthall scored a point.
Tournament Action
Noel had a game-high 24 points and Jones finished with 21 points in the win over West Lauderdale. Calhoun finished with nine points while Townes and Hughes both had four points. Williams scored two points and Townsend chipped in a point.
Burt and Hodges led the Lady Chargers with seven points each in the loss to Kosciusko. Federick and Brown both scored six points.
