Grenada has always been a special place for Tyre Phillips. The current New York Giants offensive lineman wanted to give something back to his hometown.
For the second time in four years, the former Grenada Charger, East Mississippi Community College Lion and Mississippi State Bulldog will host his 2nd Annual Community Fun Day on Saturday, June 24 at Grenada High School.
“Being from a small town like Grenada, I wanted to show the young children that you can be from a small town and have dreams to make it to the National Football League if you work hard,” Phillips said. “Most of the guys coming to the camp are from Mississippi and played with me and MSU. They are very successful guys, not just on an NFL roster.”
Activities are slated to be from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Grenada High School soccer practice field, located just off Jackson Ave. The event is open to students in Grades K-12.
Registration is from 8 until 8:45 a.m. with drills and fundamentals scheduled from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. After lunch, a seven-on-seven competition is slated from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. with an awards presentation to follow.
The headliner for the event will be Tennessee Titans All-Star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons. He will be joined by Elgton Jenkins of the Green Bay Packers and Martinez Rankin, who played for the Kansas City Chiefs. Saints defensive back J.T. Gray will also be a camp instructor. Others scheduled to take part in the seven-on-seven are former GHS standouts Genard Avery of the Indianapolis Colts, J.J. Russell of the Tampa Bucs and C.J. Avery of the Vegas Vipers.
