The cause of a Monday night fire at a newly opened business remains under investigation, according to Grenada Fire Marshal Donnie Willis.
Nancy’s Donuts, located at 1268 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, received extensive damage in the fire, which was dispatched at 7:43 p.m. on Jan. 10, a week shy of the shop being open for two months.
“We will be closed until further notice due to a fire at our shop,” the business posted on Facebook at 9:50 p.m. Monday. “We will update everyone as soon as possible. We appreciate your prayers and support.”
The previously shuttered donut shop reopened on Nov. 17, 2021, as Nancy’s Donuts.
According to GFD public relations officer Paul Reese, the first fire unit arrived on the scene at 7:45 p.m. and reported heavy smoke coming from the building. Firefighters entered through the front door and extinguished the fire.
Fire Chief Ronnie Willis Sr. believes that the fire originated in the kitchen area of the donut shop and was confined to that room.
“The kitchen area suffered fire, water and smoke damage,” he said. The front area of the store had water damage. Smoke was cleared from the building by a PPV (positive pressure ventilation) fan.”
The scene was declared under control at 8:05, according to Reese. The last fire department unit left the scene at 10:40 p.m.
Firefighters from all four GFD stations, Chief Willis and Marshal Willis responded to the call. Officers with the Grenada Police Department assisted with traffic control and blocked roadways while firefighters battled and cleared the scene.
