Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2023, at All Saints Episcopal Church in Grenada for Mr. Joe Morrison Byrd, 91, of Grenada, who died on Wednesday, Jan. 25, in Grenada. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 30, in Lee Memorial Park in Verona.
Joe was born on Nov. 14, 1931, in Hamburg, Ark., the son of the late Edward Morrison and the late Lavern Morris Byrd. The family later moved to Cleveland, Miss., where he graduated from Cleveland High School and enlisted in the United States Navy, serving five years during the Korean War. He then attended Delta State University and graduated from Mississippi State University with an engineering degree.
Following graduation from MSU, Joe married the love of his life, Betty Chaney. He worked for Heatcraft for 37 years and after he retired, opened the Electric Shop. He also performed consulting engineer work for General Electric and taught several electrical classes at Holmes Community College. Mr. Byrd was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church where he sang in the choir.
In addition to his parents, his brother, John William “Bubba” Byrd (Sue), preceded Joe in death.
Survivors include, his wife of 63 years, Betty Chaney Byrd, and a host of cousins, friends and extended family.
Pallbearers will be Brent Brasher, Harvey Leslie, John Lake Merriman, Pat Merriman, Mike Nabors and Rick Wilbourn. Honorary pallbearers will be Giles Bounds, Devo Lancaster and Joe Woods.
