With thousands of schoolchildren living within the 422.1 square miles that make up Grenada County and five school campuses, crafting school bus routes becomes a logistical nightmare each year for administrators with the Grenada School District.
However, it’s a task that the GSD Transportation Department takes seriously as they prepare to transport students to and from school safely each day.
Drivers will crank up their school buses for the first time in the 2024-25 school year on Tuesday, Aug. 6, for the first day of school. Nearly 60 bus routes — many of which are split into two trips — will be needed this school year to transport students.
Nevertheless, it is impossible for each bus driver to make hundreds of door-to-door stops daily.
“It is impossible to travel every Street or Road, and stop at every house where children live,” GSD Transportation Director Benji Britt said. “Bus drivers will be instructed to establish pick up points within a neighborhood where children can gather to board the bus. They will also be let off at these points in the afternoon.”
