It was a busy week last week for the Grenada Lady Chargers.
After winning a pair of matches over Winona to start the season, the Lady Chargers had their first road game and opened district play at home against Columbus.
It wasn’t a thing of beauty but Grenada was able to win both matches by a 3-0 decision to improve to 4-0 overall.
“It’s good to get off to a 4-0 start,” coach Collin Ray said. “This team is still going through growing pains.”
In the Columbus match, Grenada found themselves playing against a group of athletic Lady Falcons. Grenada won the first two sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-13. The third set was much tighter as Grenada squeezed to a 25-22 victory to sweep the match by a 3-0 count.
“I thought we played hard,” Ray said. “At times, it wasn’t as good as it should have been. In the end, we were able to get the job done. Give Columbus credit, they are a very athletic team.”
Grenada got outstanding play from Rylee Murphree and Alex Mulhollen.
The junior varsity also swept its matches winning by scores of 25-6 and 25-6.
Okolona
After not having much trouble with Winona to open the season, Grenada made the trek to Okolona to face the Lady Chieftains.
The Lady Chargers trailing by eight points in the opening set before rallying for a 23-15 win. They closed the match out with wins of 25-21 and 25-10.
“We needed a set like the first one to see how we react when we fall behind,” Ray said. “The girls responded well.”
Rylee Murphree led Grenada with six kills.
Grenada returns to action Sept. 8, hosting New Hope at 5:30 p.m., beginning with junior varsity action. The Lady Chargers journey to Columbus Sept. 10 for play. JV action is at 5 p.m. with the varsity set for 6 p.m.
