Grenada resident Daniel Cordell Jr. has been transferred to the Leflore County Jail on murder and aggravated assault charges following a shooting earlier this month.
The 21-year-old is accused of shooting Derric Suddoth and Santonio Williams multiple times with a .45 caliber handgun inside Suddoth’s vehicle on McNutt Street in Winona on Friday, Sept. 9, according to Winona Police Chief Roshaun Daniels.
“Cordell supposedly stole a firearm from Derric Suddoth,” Daniels said, adding one of the victims and multiple witnesses identified Cordell as the suspect.
Both victims were transported to a Jackson-area hospital with life threatening injuries. Williams died from his injuries later that evening, Daniels said.
Cordell fled the scene of the shooting, initiating a manhunt involving officers from multiple agencies. The manhunt also led to the lock down of Winona Secondary, Winona Elementary, Winona Christian Schools and several day care centers.
Confusion about the events leading to the shooting and the suspect’s motives led to the cancelation of the football game between J.Z. George and Winona scheduled for Carrollton that night.
After Kilmichael authorities picked up Cordell on Sept. 10, he was turned over to Winona police, where he was arrested and transported to Carroll Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility. It’s unknown how he made it to Kilmichael.
Daniels went on to show his appreciation for the assistance provided by other law enforcement agencies.
“I would like to thank Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, Carroll County Sheriff’s Department and Grenada County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance with manpower,” Daniels said. “It has never happened in Winona with multiple agencies working together.”
Cordell’s bond was set at $500,000 for the murder charge and $100,000 for the aggravated assault, according to Daniels.
The case remains under investigation.
