The Grenada Police Department investigated a variety of cases last week with a pair of fatalities, along with two shootings, leading its caseload.
Last Friday morning, GPD officers investigated a fatal single-vehicle accident that took place on Highway 51 South, just south of Modine Manufacturing. Xterrius Flowers, 33, of Winona was later identified as the victim by Grenada County Coroner Douglas Yates.
According to reports, the 2010 red Nissan Frontier pick-up truck that Flowers was driving made impact with a dirt packer near the bridge construction site as he traveled south. Flowers was pronounced dead at UMMC-Grenada at 6:32 a.m.
Later Friday evening, Robert Jonathan Hettich, 46, of Grenada was killed as he attempted to cross from the north side of Highway 8 to the south side of Highway 8. Hettich was struck by a vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, according to GPD Chief George Douglas.
Also Friday night, a person carrying a young child was struck by a vehicle in the McDonald’s parking lot. No injuries were reported. The accident is still under investigation.
Friday afternoon, a school bus with the Grenada School District was struck by a pickup truck at the intersection of West Monroe Street and Jackson Avenue just as school was letting out for the weekend. Less than 10 elementary school-aged students were onboard, however, no injuries were reported.
Douglas added that both shootings took place on Elm Street. The first occurred last Thursday and the other was reported on Sunday. Both are under investigation, according to officials.
