The Grenada County Board of Supervisors held its first meeting of July on Monday morning to conduct business. Four of the five supervisors were present with District 5 Supervisor Chad Gray being absent.
A wide variety of topics were addressed during the meeting. After approving the minutes for the two meetings held in June, Ed Hargett of Corrections Management Services addressed the Board concerning the handling of city inmates in the Grenada County Jail. Currently, the county charges the city $48 per day for male inmates and $50 for females. Medical bills for the inmates continue to increase and stands at $16 a day per inmate.
In other action, the Board approved the quarterly appropriation for both the Sheriff’s Office and the Tax Assessor/Collector. The Board finds the following Sheriff’s budget calls for an allocation of $500,412.50 The Tax Assessor’s budget calls for an allocation of $146,281.75 and Tax Collector’s budget calls for an allocation of $119,515.
The clerk of this Board accordingly is authorized to fund the Sheriff and Tax Assessor/Collector the amount due each office for the second quarter of the current fiscal year. The amount of each shall be in accordance with the overall budget of Grenada County for the current fiscal year.
The Board also approved travel for Sheriff Garrett Hartley and Chief Deputy Ricky Williamson II to attend the Mississippi Association of Supervisors Insurance and Law Enforcement Risk Conference Aug. 12-13 in Flowood. Approval was also given to Veterans Service Officer Marcus Barkley to attend to County Veterans Service Officer Training on Sept. 29-Oct. 3 in Oxford.
City Engineer Karl Grubb of Willis Engineering, Inc., made a request for a right-of-entry application to the railroad for $3,750 for use of the right-of-way for an Emergency Watershed Project off Murff Drive. He also asked for opening of bids for the project, which will be released at 9 a.m. on Aug. 18. A request for reimbursement in the amount of $413,882 was made for the Graysport Crossing Bridge work. They also asked for reimbursement of state funds in the amount of $621,493 for construction on Nat G. Troutt Road.
The Board approved the payment of claims for the month along with the authority to pay and credit card report. Approval was also received for the monthly receipt report, land redemption report, justice court settlement report and jail meal logs. They voted 4-0 to increase the elections commissioners salary from $165 to $200.
The Board adjourned and will meet again at 9 a.m. on July 21 in the Board Room at the County Courthouse.
