The Grenada Chargers and Lady Chargers closed out the first half of the 2022-23 season with a short trip to Winona last Friday night.
It was a big night for both teams as they had blowout wins. The Lady Chargers improved to 9-2 on the season with a 71-26 victory while the boys are 10-2 with an 88-53 thrashing of WHS.
In the girls game, Lauren Harges paced four players in double figures with 17 points and six assists.
“We were able to get some early scoring opportunities with our defense and were able to open up a big lead on the road,” GHS coach Kendrick Conley said. “It was good to end the first half of the schedule with a road win.”
Katelyn Leavy had 13 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Amya Anderson also scored 13 points and had six rebounds and four assists. Kelsey Federick had a big night with 12 points and 14 rebounds. The senior had four blocks and three steals.
Boys
The Chargers trailed 20-11 early but took control of the game in the second period outscoring Winona 28-5 to lead 39-25 at halftime.
“We didn’t shoot the ball particularly well, early in the game and they out rebounded us, Grenada boys coach Joey Cooley said. “We trailed by double digits in the first quarter. However, our defensive intensity changed in the second as we jumped out to a double digit lead and never looked back.”
A total of 11 GHS players were in the scoring column lead by senior Cameo Noel with a game-high 27 points on 9-of-17 shooting and 8-of-15 from the field. He also added five rebounds and three steals. Classmate Donte Calhoun finished with 18 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field to go with four rebounds, seven assists and six steals.
Juniors Jekerious Williams and Kelton Jones both scored 11 points. Williams finished with five steals. Sophomore Zach Townsend scored eight points.
Sophomore Jarques Perry had four points. Classmates Antonio Scott and Richard Smith both had two points. Juniors Joshua Hughes and Chris Cole each had two points. Martrevion Austin rounded out the scoring for a point.
Grenada returns to action Jan. 3 traveling to Sardis to play Class 3A foe North Panola.
