Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 26, 2024, at Vaiden Baptist Church for Betty Larsen Shirley, 91, of Vaiden, who died on Friday, Aug. 23, at her residence. Burial followed in Hopewell Cemetery in Vaiden. The Rev. Leon Holly, the Rev. Luke Pogue and the Rev. John Staszefski officiated. Visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 25, at Oliver Funeral Home in Winona and from 9 a.m. until service time on Monday, Aug. 26, at Vaiden Baptist Church.
Mrs. Shirley was born on April 27, 1933, in Wyeville, Wis, the daughter of the late Chris and the late Ella Peterson Larsen. She was a retired seamstress and homemaker, who was also active in her community. She was a member of the Live Wires and Homemakers Club, was a former 4-H leader and drove a school bus. She was a longtime active member of Vaiden Baptist Church where she served in several areas such as former GA’s teacher, making sweet tea for all church luncheons and events, and serving her famous carrot cake, which was rumored to be the best in all of Carroll County.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Howard Shirley; one daughter, Beverly Shirley, and two brothers, Duane Larsen and Robert Larsen, preceded Mrs. Shirley in death.
Survivors include, her five daughters, Ann Robbins of Hernando, Patsy Stewart of Oakland, Marsha Burrell of Vaiden, Linda Pogue (Matt) of Tomnolen and Sandy Goodson (Ken) of Grenada; son, Jerry Shirley of Vaiden; sister, Alice Kitzman of Nevada; one brother, Don Larsen of Wisconsin; nine grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Frank Robbins, Chris Robbins, Jeramy Shirley, Luke Pogue, Chet Pogue and John Goodson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Hopewell Cemetery Fund, 29 CR 30, Vaiden, MS 39176.
