A public hearing regarding the addition of speed humps on two city streets received no civic concerns last week and were unanimously approved.
City of Grenada Mayor Billy F. Collins opened the public hearing just over eight minutes into last Monday night’s regular monthly City Council meeting.
“Anybody here for or against the speed humps at Mattingly (Street) and O’Brien Hill Road?” Collins asked.
With no one in the audience of the well-attended meeting expressing concerns or objecting to the speed humps, Ward 6 Councilman Larry W. Vance broke the silence.
“Mayor, if there is no one here to object, I would like to make a motion that we move forward with the Mattingly Street and O’Brien Hill Road speed humps,” he said.
Ward 1 Councilman Warren B. Cox Sr. seconded the motion, which was passed following a unanimous vote.
Mattingly Street is located off Jones Road near Grenada Middle School, extending to Powell Street running parallel to Commerce Street in a residential area.
O’Brien Hill Road is located off Hwy. 8 about half a mile east of Hwy. 333 forking off to the left.

• Heard an update on the Grenada Sports Complex from Kyle Grubb with Willis Engineering, Inc.
“What we’re working on right now, we’ve got all of the storm drain lines and all inlets installed,” he said. “We’ve started on the block walls for the concessions. We have not got to the roof yet, but we have all utilities stubbed out. We’re working on running water and sewer lines at this point, so basically, we have roughly, I would say, 85 to 90 percent of all underground utilities ran. After we finish up on those, you’re about to start seeing a lot more progress on the service that you can actually see.”
Grubb added that a lot of concrete paving, footings for dugouts, backstop walls and shade structures will begin taking shape soon after utility work concludes.
“I think that we’re making pretty good progress for what we had in mind and are moving along pretty good,” Grubb concluded.
