Funeral services were held at noon on Saturday, May 29, 2021, at Bunker Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Sallis for Mrs. Darnelle Yvonne Armstead, 69, of Grenada, who died on Wednesday morning, May 19, with her loving and devoted husband by her side as the Lord called her home. He said to her “Well done, good and faithful servant!” Burial followed in the Church Cemetery. Pastor Christopher Murry of New St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church of Detroit, Mich., was the eulogist. Visitation was held 30 minutes prior to the service on Sunday, May 29, at the church.
Darnelle Yvonne Armstead was born on Nov. 10, 1951, in Chicago, Ill., to the union of DeArmond Sr. and Sue Clayton. She was the sixth of seven children. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at New Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, Ill. She attended Bowen High School in Chicago, Ill., and after graduating in 1969, she furthered her education at Daley College in Chicago, Ill. She retired from CommonWealth Edison after 32 years of service as an account analysis.
On Dec. 4, 1971, Darnelle married the Rev. Lamont Armstead. To this union, Lydia Marie and LaRon David were born. Darnelle was a devoted Christian and very active within the church. She was a member of New Covenant Missionary Baptist Inspirational Choir, worked with the youth ministry at Original Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church and served as president of the November Birthday Ministry at True Believers Missionary Baptist Church, all in Chicago, Ill.
In 2005, Darnelle and her husband, the Rev. Lamont, moved to Grenada, where she served as First Lady at West Grove Missionary Baptist Church until her health began to decline.
Her parents, DeArmond Sr. and Sue Clayton, and her siblings, DeArmond Clayton Jr., Jacqueline Hill, Sonja Turner-Allen and Ronald Clayton Sr., preceded Darnelle in death.
Survivors include, her loving husband, the Rev. Lamont Armstead; daughter, Lydia Reed of Homewood, Ill.; son, LaRon Armstead of Robbins, Ill.; one sister, Portia Dixon of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, Lanier Clayton Sr. of Los Angeles, Calif.; six grandchildren, TreShawn Armstead, Jaylon Miskel, Jessica Armstead, Janae Armstead, Austin Morris, Justin Reed and Isabella Newman-Armstead; godson, Pastor Christopher Murry and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Darnelle was warm and friendly and loved by many. She will be truly missed and fondly remembered by her loved ones.
