Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, 2021, at First Presbyterian Church in Grenada for Sara Inez Moore, 89, who died on Thursday, Sept. 9, in Oxford after a brief illness. A private family burial will follow in Duck Hill Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 1 p.m. until service time on Monday, Sept. 13, at the church.
Sara was born on Oct. 24, 1931, in Calhoun County, the youngest of six children to Lee R. Moore and Mae Betterton Moore. She graduated from Calhoun City High School with the Class of 1950. She was a member of the school’s championship basketball team, while in high school. A graduate of the Grenada School of Nursing, she did additional nurses training at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, La., and The Florida State Hospital.
In 1954, she married Earl Alexander Moore Jr. in Biloxi. They were married for 57 years before his death in 2012. Their life was spent in Duck Hill, raising their four children. She spent many years as a registered nurse in the Grenada Hospital and later at the Mississippi Department of Health. An active member of First Presbyterian in Grenada, Sara was a faithful member of the Lenten Luncheon Committee. She was also very involved with Kirk Academy in her children’s education and other activities.
In their retirement, she and Earl spent their time traveling abroad and also seeing much of America. Her last years were spent living at Elmcroft of Oxford where she enjoyed her time there with many friends old and new.
Her husband and one granddaughter, Alexa Cooke, preceded Sara in death.
Survivors include, her daughters, Linda Newell and her husband, Bruce, of Greenwood and Ginger Cooke and her husband, Steve, of Clarksdale; one granddaughter, Molly Cooke of Oxford and her sons, Earl Alexander “Trey” Moore III of Calhoun County and Lee Herring Moore of Oxford.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests that memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 387, Grenada, MS 38902 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
