Allene Ligon Allen

Allene Ligon Allen, 84, of Ridgeland, passed away from this life and entered her eternal home on Tuesday, June 9, 2020.
Allene was born in Slate Springs on Feb. 11, 1936, to Thomas Allen and Sybil West Ligon. She grew up in Grenada and attended Grenada High School and Mississippi State College for Women. She married Kenneth “Bill” Allen of Holcomb in 1954. The couple lived in Greenwood, Alexandria, La; El Centro, Calif.; El Paso, Texas, and Memphis before retiring in Jackson in 1992 to be with their family. Family was everything to Allene. She was an active member of Pear Orchard Presbyterian Church and loved her Lydia Circle and Wednesday Bible Study friends dearly. She made her final residence at Beau Ridge Independent Living Community in Ridgeland, where she made many new friends who were a source of great joy to her.
She is survived by two daughters, Diane Allen Davis (Ken) of New Port Richey, Fla., and Susan Allen Spencer (Clark) of Ridgeland; grandson Spencer Caldwell Davis of New Port Richey; granddaughters Mary Clark Spencer Weems (Randall) and Leslie Allen Spencer, both of Jackson, all who affectionately knew her as Mimi. She was also survived by a brother, Thomas Allen Ligon Jr. (Melanie) of Grenada. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years Kenneth “Bill” Allen on March 9, 2018, as well as her brother James “Jimmy” Granville Ligon and her parents.
A service was held at Pear Orchard Presbyterian Church in Ridgeland on Friday, June 12. A graveside service was held that afternoon at Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery in Grenada.

Mrs. Allie Blount of Carroll County died Monday, June 15, 2020, at Select Specialty Hospital in Jackson. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by McKibben and Guinn.

Charlene Porter Burt

Mrs. Charlene Porter Burt, 87, of Duck Hill, a long-time resident of Grenada, passed away Friday, June 12, 2020, at her residence.
She was born July 12, 1932, at Midway to John Willie and Annie Dorilla Hood Porter. Mrs. Burt was a devoted homemaker and operated a daycare in her home for many years. She was a charter member of Friendship Baptist Church.
A graveside service was held Monday, June 15, at the Oddfellows Cemetery in Grenada with the Rev. Sherman Barnette and the Rev. Howard Beam officiating.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Renfroe (Mickey) of Bay St. Louis, and Debra Henry (Barry) of Duck Hill; one son Danny Burt (Sheila) of Grenada; daughter-in-law Rene Burt of Grenada; five grandchildren, Lisa Holland, Jason Logan, Mickey Renfroe, Jonathan Burt and Mark Burt; 10 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Everett Franklin Burt Jr.; son Robert Earl “Bobby” Burt; two sisters, Beatrice Harrell and Sally Foster, and a brother William Henry Porter.

Geneva Waits England

Geneva Waits England, 81, of Grenada passed away June 9, 2020, at Baptist DeSoto Hospital, Southaven.
A dearly-loved and devoted educator, Geneva invested in the lives of her students, both at Kirk Academy and Holmes Community College Grenada Campus. Over her 40-year career, Mrs. England was honored with many recognitions and accolades for her achievements in the classroom. After retiring, Geneva enjoyed gardening and traveling. She remained an active member and Sunday school teacher of First Baptist Church of Grenada and enjoyed regular study of God’s Word with her community Bible Study group.
Geneva was born Aug. 10, 1938, to Lloyd and Jewel Waits of Webster Co. Her greatest joys in life were her family. She is survived by her husband of 63 years Archie T. England; her son Archie W. England (Karen) Mandeville, La.; her granddaughters Allison McLellan (Ronnie) Marrero, La.; Courtney Sparks (Stephen) Humble, Texas; and Emily Watts (Jacob) Frisco, Texas; her sister Sherry Gammel (Steve) Eupora; with five great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Geneva is preceded in death by her parents.
A graveside service celebrating Geneva’s life, love, and legacy was held at Bradford Chapel Cemetery, Gore Springs, on Thursday, June 11, with Drs. Archie W. England and Jim Nunnelee officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Training Pastors International or First Baptist Church of Grenada.

Jewel Fancher Kitchens

Mrs. Jewel Laverne Fancher Kitchens, 87, of Byram, passed away Monday, June 8, 2020, at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.
She was born Nov. 28, 1932, in Greenwood to Emmett Noah and Alma Louise Randall Fancher. Mrs. Kitchens spent most of her working life at Trustmark Bank, and she was a member of Queen Lane Baptist Church in Jackson.
A graveside service was held Wednesday, June 10, at the Oddfellows Cemetery in Grenada with the Rev. Barry Worrell officiating.
Survivors include two daughters, Debbie Philley and her husband Ronnie of Grenada, and Sherry Vining and her husband Jerry of Southaven; one son James E. Kitchens Jr. and his wife Lisa of Byram; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband James Elroy Kitchens.

Douglas ‘Sonny’ Lemley

Mr. Douglas H. “Sonny” Lemley, 68, of Grenada, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2020, in Grenada.
He was born Sept. 2, 1951, in Carrollton to James Douglas and Hattie Lee Collins Lemley. Sonny had owned and operated J&S Distributors for over 40 years, working as a wholesale distributor to many retail locations in Grenada and the surrounding areas. Sonny honorably served our country in the Mississippi National Guard and was a devoted Kansas City Chiefs fan.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service. A private family service will follow immediately in the Chapel of McKibben and Guinn with the Rev. Lanny Haley officiating.
Survivors include two daughters, Krisie Leigh Lemley Jenkins of Lexington, and Misty Love Lemley Carson (Chad) of Grenada; one son Ashton Shawn Lemley (Lori) of Greenwood; and seven grandchildren, Erin Faith Jenkins, Parker Grant Jenkins, Darren Morgan, Cody Carson, Rylan Carson, Conner Carson and Hana Lemley.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Susie S. Tierce

Susie S. Tierce, 90, of Grenada, died Tuesday, June 9, 2020, at her home.
Graveside  services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 16, in the Midway Church Cemetery near Vaiden.
Mrs. Tierce was born on Sept. 1, 1929, in Vaiden and was the daughter of the late John Edward Stuart and Susie Annie McBride Stuart. Susie was a beautician. She was a member the First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Tierce was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Talmadge Tierce.
She is survived by one great-niece and one great-nephew.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Grenada or to the American Diabetes Association.
