Ward Four citizens have elected a new city councilman after 23 years.
Challenger Michael Smith defeated the Rev. Ernest Hargrove with 65 percent of the vote. Smith received 242 votes to Hargrove’s 128.
After his 2016 loss to Hargrove by a narrow margin, and a 2012 effort coming up short in Ward Two, Smith said he is overwhelmed by his win.
“I keep asking myself ‘is it real?’” Smith said. “That’s how overjoyed I am. The voters of Ward Four have spoken, and now it’s time to hit the ground running.”
At the polls, Smith was decisively the winner with 17 votes to 81 for Hargrove. He earned the most absentees with 67 to Hargrove’s 46.
Smith grew up in Holcomb and is a 1997 graduate of Grenada High School.
For years Smith has been known for his work throughout the community in sports and is a member of the Grenada Tourism Commission. He is also a district manager at Auto Zone.
