Willie Baker

Funeral services for Willie Baker of Water Valley are Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mt. Grove M. B. Church with burial in Sanders Chapel M.B. Church cemetery.
Mr. Baker, 87, died at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford on Feb. 9, 2020. He was born on April 23, 1932. Mr. Baker worked for the street department in Water Vallley.
Mr. Baker is survived by five daughters, Ruby McKoy of Water Valley, Annie Johnson of Itta Bena, Marilyn Sims of Oxford, Darlene Mitchell of Coldwater, and Dorothy Britton of Atlanta;  three sons, Paul Baker and Bobby Baker, both of Olive Branch, and Patrick Baker of Waldorf, Md..

Alice Johnson

Alice Johnson, age 61, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020, at her home in Coffeeville.
Services were held Friday at Wells Funeral Home in Batesville Interment was in Grenada Memorial Garden.
Alice was born Sept. 25, 1958, to the late Susan Zoder Slaughter in Charleston. She worked in the marketing department for Walmart for 40 plus years. She was of the Pentecostal faith.
Alice was preceded in death by her mother; husband Steven I. Johnson.
She is survived by two sisters, Robbie Hogstad of Navarre, Fla., and Lois Burns of Ridgeland; three brothers, Ray Slaughter, of Charleston, Joe Slaughter of Clarksdale, Robert Hancock Jr., of California; fiancé, Hank Covington of Grenada; several nieces and nephews.

Martha P. Lance

Graveside services for Martha P. Lance, 88, of Greenwood, are at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 15, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Grenada.
Visitation is Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. at Mortimer National Funeral Home in Grenada.
Martha died Monday, Feb. 10, 2020, in Oxford at the home of her son.
She was born on July 15, 1931, in Taylor and was the daughter of the late Marshall F. Pugh and Lottie Cecil Smith Pugh.
Martha was employed by Medart Locker Company in Greenwood as an inspector. She was a member the Christian Congregation of Jehovah‘s Witness.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Edward R. Lance; three sisters, Jewell Middleton, Ruby Chestnut and Opal Malone; and two brothers, Winford Pugh and Burl Pugh.
She is survived by one daughter Lari Suhr of Gretna, Neb.; two step-sons, Edward R. Lance Jr. of Oxford and Jimmy S. Lance of Senatobia; and five grandchildren.

Barbara Sue Magee

Barbara Sue Magee, 80, of St. Louis, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2020.
Barbara was born in Marks on Aug. 23, 1939, and she was the daughter of the late James Rupert Magee and Marina Hayward Magee of Oakland.
Barbara grew up in Oakland, and she was a member of Oakland Methodist Church. Barbara decided she loved city life, and she moved to Memphis in the late 1960s to begin her long career in the insurance industry. She then moved to Nashville, and in the 1970s, Barbara decided her permanent home would be St. Louis because she was fascinated with the city’s vast cultural history. Barbara loved to read any historical book or document that she could get her hands on, and she enjoyed researching family genealogy.
Ms. Magee was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Martha M. Toole and Charlene Magee Leverette.
Barbara is survived by one sister Sylvia M. Grant (Will) of Oakland,  a close cousin, Sarah Wilbourn (Terry) of Brandon; and a host of nephews and nieces.

Cecil Melton

Mr. Cecil Melton, 76, of Grenada, passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2020, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 21, 1943, in Grenada to Pete and Marjorie Mae Tartt Melton. He was a retired truck driver and a member of the Grenada Church of God.
Funeral services were Thursday at the Grenada Church of God with the  Rev. James McElroy officiating. Interment was in the Smith Cemetery at Rosebloom.
Survivors include his wife Peggy Melton; his mother Marjorie Melton of Grenada; seven daughters, Kay Starnes (Daley) of Corinth, Judy Armstrong (Michael) of Columbus, Lois Doss of Chicago, Magan Emrick (Russell) of Grenada, Casandra Kennedy of Grenada, Jada Glenn (Tate) of Gore Springs and Ellen Jackson of Grenada; two sons, Jerry Glen Melton (Kim) of Coldwater and James Alton Kennedy of Grenada; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Pete Melton and a sister, Frances Pearl Melton.

Johnnie Mae Poole

Donald D. Skelton

Mr. Donald Dozier Skelton, 93, of Grenada, passed away Monday, Feb. 10, 2020 in Dallas.
He was born Oct. 29, 1926, in Webster County to Robert Edward and Eula Valentine Skelton.
Don honorably served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He later earned a Master’s degree from Mississippi State University in Agriculture and Adult Education. A resident of Grenada since 1951, he retired as county agent with the Cooperative Extension Service following 32 years of service. He also served on the original board for the Grenada County Fair and served many years with the Fair Commission.
Mr. Skelton was a member of First Baptist Church – Grenada where he taught Sunday school for many years, and he was also an active member of the Grenada Kiwanis Club for over 60 years.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from noon until service time Saturday at McKibben and Guinn.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Crafton of Batesville and Teresa Jones of Mesquite, Texas; a son Kevin Skelton and his wife Shelley of Dallas; three nephews, John Williams, James R. Skelton and Bill Skelton; 10 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Pauline Pickering Skelton and Jean Hamilton Skelton; son Stephen Skelton; sister Margaree Williams and a brother Cecil Skelton.

Norman Curtis Swims

Funeral services for Norman Curtis Swims of Greenwood are Sunday at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church.
Mr. Swims, 62, died of cancer on Feb. 9, 2020. He was born on Feb. 17, 1957. Mr. Swims worked as a custodian and enjoyed drawing.  He worked at First United Methodist Church in Greenwood for 42 years.
Mr. Swims is survived by his wife Sylvia Jewel Swims of Holcomb;  three daughters, Lawanda Hubbard, Jennifer Baker, and Jania Garner, all of Greenwood;  five sons, Antonio Curtis Swims of Norfolk, Va., Norman Curtis Swims, Curtis Harris, Ramon Smith and Marquis Harris, all of Greenwood; six sisters, Lillian Clemons of Riverdale, Ga., Josephine Teagues of Grenada, Mary Echols, Brenda Swims and Linda Swims, all of Chicago, and Rosie Swims of Boston; and two brothers, Dwayne Sanders of Chicago and John Russell Swims of Greenwood.

Ophal Bew Tedford

Funeral services for Ophal Bew Tedford of Grenada are Saturday at 3 p.m. at Burning Bush M. B. Church with burial in Haven Rest Cemetery.
Mrs. Tedford, 64, died of natural causes on Feb. 8, 2020. She was born on Nov. 2, 1955. Mrs. Tedford was a customer service cashier,  certified nurses’ aid,  and an avid bowler.

Mr. Thomas, 59, died on Feb. 6, 2020.  He was born on Jan. 20, 1961.

Granville C. Vaughan Jr.

Mr. Granville C. Vaughan Jr., 90, of Coffeeville, passed away Monday, Feb. 10, 2020, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 15, 1930, to Granville C. and Moree Trull Vaughan. He was a former sales person for Frito Lay and an Army veteran during the Korean War. He was a member of Hebron Baptist Church.
Funeral services were Thursday. Interment followed in Hebron Cemetery in Walthall.
Survivors include his wife Mary Ruth Vaughan; daughter Virginia Manning (Ronnie) of College Station, Texas; son Delvin Vaughan (Connie) of Cleveland, Tenn.; sister Billie Hitt of Eupora; two grandchildren, Dale and Dustin Vaughan and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Kathy Griffin and Bonnie Hillhouse, and one brother Davis Vaughan.

Mrs. Williamson  died on Feb. 3, 2020. She was born on Jan. 15, 1929.  She worked as a custodian for Pennaco Hosiery Factory.
