Judy Ann Ballard

Judy Ann Ballard, 64, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020, at her home in Water Valley.

She was born Feb. 15, 1955, in Odessa, Texas, to the late Hiram and Blonnie (Parker) Peninger, and she was raised by her Uncle Chester and Aunt Iris Peninger in Attala County. She enjoyed drawing still lifes using a vast array of techniques, including charcoal. Her heart and passion were her family.

Visitation was Monday, Jan. 6, in the Gardiner Room at Seven Oaks Funeral Home, followed by services in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks with Uncle Jerry Greenlee officiating. Burial was in Memorial Gardens of Grenada with Aaron Mobley, Nathan Hodges, Benjamin Mobley, Caden Hodges, Daniel Wilson, Robert Greenlee and Gadge Farmer serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Todd Hodges, Shane Murray and Chris Farmer.

Judy is survived by three daughters, Melissa Hodges (Todd), Rebecca Farmer (Chris), Brandy Murray (Shane); 11 grandchildren, Mariana Mobley (Patrick), Aaron Mobley (Maddison), Benjamin Mobley, Lydia Mobley, Robert Greenlee, Daniel Wilson, Jayden Murray, Gadge Farmer, Alana Farmer, Nathan Hodges, Caden Hodges; one brother Gary Peninger; two sisters, Gloria Austin (Steven), Linda Wheeler; and her fiance Carlton Wells.
Along with her parents, Judy was preceded in death by one brother Donald Peninger; and two sisters, Sandy Robinson, and Mary Lee.

Suzanne Cannon
Rita Suzanne Cannon, 53, of Calhoun City, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2019, at the Baptist Nursing Home in Calhoun City.

She was born Aug. 5, 1966, in Grenada to Samuel Caruthers “Dock” and Martha Ann Jackson Herbert. Suzanne worked for many years in the Accounts Payable Department at Heatcraft in Grenada and was a member of Enon Baptist Church.

Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 3, at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service with the Rev. Kenneth Armstrong officiating. Interment was in the Bethel Cemetery in Carroll County.

Survivors include a daughter Anna Claire Cannon of Calhoun City; son Kyle Cannon of Calhoun City; two nephews, Chase Herbert and Cham Herbert and his wife Lacy; and an aunt Eunice Marjorie Herbert.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Jeffrey Kent Herbert.

Pallbearers were Brannon Armstrong, Klint Byars, Craigg Cannon, Hunter Harris, Cham Herbert and Chase Herbert.

Billy Dean Cook

Coach Billy Dean Cook, 78, of Eupora, passed away Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 12, 1941 in Eupora to Bill and Geraldine Franklin Cook. Coach Cook was a 1960 graduate of Eupora High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State University where he was a member of the football team.  He later earned a Master’s in Education from Delta State University.  An avid outdoorsman, Coach Cook enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he enjoyed sharing his hunting and fishing skills with his family and many students through the years.

He enjoyed a career in education that spanned 39 years, including serving on the faculty at Cherokee High School in Canton, Ga., and Calhoun City High School; culminating with a 31-year tenure at Calhoun Academy where he retired as headmaster. Coach Cook was the first recipient of the Lifetime Cougar Achievement Award and was inducted into the Mississippi Private School Association’s Hall of Fame in 2009.  He will be fondly remembered for the love that he had for each of his students, players, coaches and teachers – all of whom he considered family.  While we mourn his loss, we also celebrate in knowing that his faith has been realized and he has heard “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m.  Thursday, Jan. 2, at First Baptist Church in Eupora with Dr. David Hamilton and the Rev. Travis Gray officiating. Michael Brasher and Lauren Smith Sultan will deliver eulogies. The committal service will follow in the LaGrange Cemetery near Eupora with the Rev. Nathan Hamilton officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Calhoun Academy Gymnasium and two hours prior to the service Thursday at First Baptist Church Eupora.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years Wendy Hamilton Cook; one daughter Tracy Herring and her husband Chuck of Grenada; one son Rod Cook and his wife Rene of Pontotoc; one sister Sara Ann Beck and her husband Charles of Eupora; four grandchildren, Ty Cook and his wife; Sarah, Annie Clanton and her husband Chase, Bayley Cook and Warner Herring; three great-grandchildren, Brody Cook, Hayes Cook and McKenzie Cook.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother James Cook and his wife Sue.

Pallbearers will be Bill Beck, Brody Cook, Jimmy Cook, Ty Cook, Chase Clanton, Will Gaskin, Chuck Herring and Warner Herring. Honorary pallbearers will be The Ready Sunday school class, Wayne Burton, Tom Childs, J.D. Robertson, Loye Stephens, Buddy Thompson and many other fishing and hunting buddies.

Dianne Miller Cooper

Mrs. Dianne Miller Cooper, 69, of Dauphin Island, Ala., formerly of Carrollton, passed away Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019. in Mobile, Ala.

She was born April 13, 1950, in Grenada to Riley Jackson and Lucille Floyd Miller. Dianne retired after enjoying a long career as a supervisor at the John Richard Manufacturing Company in Greenwood. She was a devoted member of the Bellingrath Church of Christ.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service in Grenada with Bro. David Floyd officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Memorial Park. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service Friday at McKibben and Guinn.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years Richard Cooper; one sister Patricia Holman and her husband David of Water Valley; one brother Dale Miller of Oxford; one niece Mandy Miller of Oxford; one nephew Colby Miller of Oxford; one great-niece Adamie Sticker of Shelbyville, Tenn.; and a great-great-nephew Bash Sticker of Shelbyville, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Dorothy Hayden Hayward

Mrs. Dorothy Hayden Hayward, 79, of Holcomb, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020, at Baptist Memorial Hospital North Mississippi in Oxford.

Mildred Noe Howe

Mrs. Mildred Noe Howe, longtime resident of Oakland, was born on Oct. 17, 1928.  She entered Heaven’s Gates on Jan. 3, 2020, at the age of 91, surrounded by her family.

A devoted mother and homemaker, Mildred loved working in her yard, gardening, quilting and spending time with her family.  She loved watching football and baseball games on television.  She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Grenada.  Mildred retired after working over 20 years at Heatcraft in Grenada.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Ethel Birt Howe Jr. She was also preceded in death by a son Bobby Howe; three sisters, Frances Hawkins, Doris Jenkins and Dorothy Shrader; three brothers, Raymond Noe, Rayford Noe and Jackie Noe, and her parents, Earl Herbert and Jessie Fisackerly Noe.

Mildred is survived by her daughters, Pat Harbin of Grenada, Lynda Thompson of Batesville and Joyce Moore (Bobby) of Crowder; two sons, Butch Howe (Susie) of Coffeeville and Bubba Howe (Lee Ann) of Tillatoba; a daughter-in-law, Christine Howe of Grenada; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services celebrating her life were Monday, Jan. 6, at Friendship Baptist Church in Grenada with Dr. Bob Self, Bro. Eddie Randolph and Bro. Rickey Harris officiating. Interment was in the Goshen Cemetery near Coffeeville.

Pallbearers will be Robbie Howe, Chris Ford, Scotty Ford, Jacob Thompson, Bradley Moore, Jeremy Howe and Justin Howe.

Ottie Daniel Kendall

Mr. Ottie Daniel Kendall, 87, of Cascilla, passed away Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020, at his residence.

He was born April 29, 1932, in Tallahatchie County to John Daniel and Vinnie Kendall. He retired after working for 50 years at Heatcraft in Grenada and was a member of the North Shady Grove Church of God at Cascilla. Mr. Kendall was also an avid gardener.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the North Shady Grove Church of God. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Tuesday all at the church.

Survivors include three daughters, Annie Allbritton (Billy Joe) of Grenada, Diane Tribble (Dave) of Cascilla and Rena Whitten of Eupora; two sisters, Margaret Moss of Cascilla and Rivers Franklin of Grenada; one brother Doyle Kendall of Cascilla; eight grandchildren, Michelle Rideout, Cherri Wilkey, Joey Allbritton, April Cooper, Matthew Whitten, Thomas Whitten, Jerry “Pee-Wee” Wolfe Jr. and Ryan Allbritton; 18 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dorothy Elizabeth Carpenter Kendall; three sisters, Essie Allbritton, Dessie Bledsoe and Elizabeth Vance; and a grandson Lyndon Whitten.

Pallbearers will be Joey Allbritton, Ryan Allbritton, Connor Rideout, Jacob Rideout, Matthew Whitten, Thomas Whitten and Jerry “Pee-Wee” Wolfe Jr.

Theotha Lee Lewis

Funeral services for Theotha Lee Lewis of Grenada, native of Coffeeville, were Saturday at St. Peter M.B. Church with burial in Haven Rest Cemetery.
Mrs. Lewis, 87, died at UMMC Grenada on Dec. 25, 2019.  She was born on Aug. 6, 1932. Mrs. Lewis was a nurse for 50 years at Grenada hospital.
Mrs. Lewis is survived by her daughter Beverly Lewis Bell of Grenada and her son Marty Lewis of Grenada.

The Rev. Willie J. Purnell

Funeral services for The Rev. Willie L. Purnell  of Riverdale, Ill., formerly of Grenada, were Friday at Clark-Williams Funeral Home chapel with burial in Harmony Cemetery in Winona.

The Rev. Purnell, 88, died at Ingalls Hospital in Harvey, Ill., on Dec. 23, 2019.  He was born on Aug. 8, 1931.
