Heading into Friday’s road game at Winona Christian, Kirk Academy Coach Ken Chandler felt good about the defensive game plan in place to slow down the Stars vaunted passing attack.
The Raiders had the chore of slowing down the Stars attack led by eighth grader John White. White entered the game with over 1,600 yards and 26 touchdowns. Winona also had a solid receiver corps of Choice Diffey, Dalton Wiggins, Latham Hill and Reed Roberts. They also were good in the running game with Thomas Costilow.
The KA defense flexed their muscles intercepting White four times, with two of them returned for touchdowns. Kirk also blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown. Winona rallied from a 20-6 deficit to send the game into overtime tied at 20-20.
In the extra period, the Raiders would score and kick the extra point to lead 27-20. Winona answered with a touchdown to narrow the game to 27-26. The Stars elected to go for the two-point conversion.
On the play, Rob Houston Bailey broke through and tackled Costilow short of the end zone preserving a 27-26 victory.
