The special election to elect a new Ward Five city councilman is only a few weeks away, and three candidates will appear on the ballot.
Eric Harris, Col. Tim Freelon (Ret.) and John Wayne Harlow have all qualified to run in the Oct. 7 special election.
By closing hours Tuesday, no other candidates had submitted paperwork, which set the stage for the much anticipated race to fill the Ward Five vacancy.
The winner fills the remaining time on the term of Joshua Hughes, who resigned this summer due to legal issues.
According to city officials, absentee voting begins today and ballots can be cast at City Hall. Citizens voting absentee must show a form of identification before voting.
In Ward Five, 1,229 citizens are registered voters, and the special election will be held at the City Auditorium.
