The Grenada Cubs have come so close to winning a Dizzy Dean World Series title over the past three years.
They have a runnerup finish and came within a game of playing for another championship.
This season, they set their sights on the Junior Championship at Snowden Grove Park. The tournament, which began Saturday, had just five teams competing for the title. Two of those teams were teams that had beaten them over the past three seasons.
After cruising to the title game, Grenada faced Huffman, Ala., in the title game Monday.
The Cubs led 13-5 after three innings and appeared on their way to winning the title. Huffman rallied to narrow the lead to 13-9 before heavy rains postponed the game Tuesday,
In a 9 a.m. start, Huffman scored six runs in the seventh to take a 17-16 lead. Between innings, it was found that Grenada had violated a pitching rule and the Alabama squad won forcing a deciding game.
Game 2 turned into an unexpected pitcher’s duel. Grenada jumped to a 5-0 lead and held off a late rally from Huffman winning a 5-2 decision.
