The first week of absentee voting in Grenada County got off to a busy start and indicates a good trend for 2019 election.

Circuit Clerk Michele Redditt-Garcia said about 350 absentee votes were taken last week.

“For the first week, that’s a lot,” Redditt-Garcia said. “These are the absentee votes that were taken at the circuit clerk’s office or the ones that have been mailed out.”

Voters are casting their absentee ballots for the Primary Elections set for Tuesday, Aug. 6. The circuit clerk’s office will be open on Saturday, July 6, for the last day of voter registration. Redditt-Garcia said the office will be open from 8 a.m. to noon. With a little over a month left, the circuit clerk’s office will be open the last Saturday of this month, July 27, and Saturday, Aug. 3, for absentee voting.

Absentee voters are filling out paper ballots, and Redditt-Garcia said voters will decide in which political party they will be voting, as some candidates will appear in different affiliations. “After that decision, the voter will not be allowed to switch over. Those that vote a certain way in the primary will have to vote in that same party in the primary runoff,” Redditt-Garcia said.

As of Monday morning, 325 Democratic ballots had been cast, and 25 had voted Republican. The primary runoff is set for Tuesday, Aug. 27, and the General Election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 5.
