Earl ‘Sonny’ Ammons
Earl “Sonny” Ammons was born in West, Miss., on April 17, 1945. Surrounded by family and friends, he transitioned to heaven on Friday, May 31, 2019.
Visitation is Friday, June 7, from 1 to 8 p.m. at Greater Powell Chapel A.M.E. Church. Funeral services are Saturday at 2 p.m. at Abundant Life Assembly. Burial will be in Haven Rest Cemetery.
Earl was a very active member of Greater Powell Chapel A.M.E. Church. He was a member of the Trustee Board and served for many years as the Trustee Pro-Tem. In addition, he was a member of Sons of Allen, a member of the Lay Organization, served on the Usher Board, and served as the first President of the Grenada District Usher Board Union.
Sonny graduated from Carrie Dotson High School in 1963. Following his high school graduation, he pursued postsecondary education at Jackson State College. Sonny was employed in various fields. His first jobs included working for the railroad, Shaw’s Meat Market of Grenada and Bolivar County Head Start. He also tapped into an entrepreneurial side with carpentry and painting. Later, he was employed at Kirk Auto Company as a car salesman, and he worked for Central Mississippi, Incorporated (CMI) Head Start. Moreover, he was a supervisor for Kinard Construction, Inc.. Sonny began working for the City of Grenada on April 11, 2005. After 13 years of committed and dedicated service, he retired as the Director of Public Properties and Code Enforcement Officer, roles in which he thoroughly enjoyed. He took his job seriously and worked to ensure that business flowed smoothly. He was also very well-known for his work as a funeral director for Robinson and Son Funeral Home. His career in the funeral business spanned for over 40 years.
On Dec. 13, 1975, he married Lesla Ammons, and they were blessed with two daughters, Sommer Carol and Maria Dawn.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Sr. and Robbie Ammons and his brother Bobby Ammons. He was also preceded in death by his lovely wife, Lesla Ammons.
Survivors include his two daughters, Sommer (Devale) Ammons Guerin and Maria (Derrick) Ammons Barnett, both of Hattiesburg; one son Mark Davis of Memphis; one sister Earlene Harris of Atlanta; two favorite nieces, Kenya (Lateef) Ammons Clark of Houston, Texas, and Maria (Grady) Lewis of Baton Rouge, La.; two doting grandchildren, Noah Anthony and Skye Marie Barnett of Hattiesburg.
Sonny had a grand, magnetic personality. People were very easily drawn to his vibrant qualities. His candidness, confidence, and directness gained him the respect of many. His energetic spirit and willingness to help others was greatly appreciated in his community. Full of life and wisdom, he positively impacted many, many lives and will be greatly missed by other relatives, former colleagues, church members and friends.

Services for Daphine Britt Blackwell of Southaven, native of Duck Hill, are incomplete.
Mrs. Blackwell died June 6, 2019.

Henry ‘Bo’ Harvey Jr.
Funeral services for Henry “Bo” Harvey Jr. of Grenada are Saturday at 11 a.m. at Abundant Life Church of the Apostolic Faith with burial in St. John Cemetery in Duck Hill.
Mr. Harvey died at his home on May 28, 2019. He was born on March 6, 1958. Mr. Harvey served in the U.S. Army and was a former employee at the paper mill.

Funeral services for LQ James of Grenada, formerly of Knoxville and native of Montgomery County, are Saturday at 11 a.m. at Center Hill AME Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Mr. James, 71, died at his home on June 3, 2019. He was born on Sept. 8, 1947. Mr. James was a graduate of Kilmichael High School. He was a retired factory worker of Bain’s and the Pioneer Beef Company, great neighbor and friend to all.
Mr. James is survived by his wife Sallie Mae James of Grenada; two daughters, Angela Conley of Denton, Texas, and Valerie James-Johnson of Southhaven; and four brothers, Shed Hill Robinson of Eupora, Milton James of Oxford, Johnny Shelton of Gary, Ind., and Ermer B. Weir of Indianapolis.

Mr. Robinson, 69, died at UMMC-Jackson on May 27, 2019. He was born on May 14, 1949. Mr. Robinson was employed as a home health nurse.
