Tourism tax nets $38,639 in first month

Grenada has it’s first look at what the new one percent tax increase accumulated in its inaugural month — $38,639 will soon go toward the city’s sports complex.
Grenada Tourism Director Gary Worsham said he had anticipated this moment and sees that number only going up over the next couple of months.
“It’s here, we got our first check for the special tax for the Sports Complex,” Worsham said. “This was for December activity, which is normally a little slower month for tourism.”
However, Worsham said based on this first number and based on the last 11 months actual tourism revenues and trends, “we should easily generate $470,000 plus annually, which was our projected revenue for the special tax,” he said.
Citizens went to the polls on Oct. 2, 2018, and voted on the referendum that authorized Grenada to levy additional taxes on hotels-motels, restaurants, and bars.
With the new tax set in place, 100 percent of the funds go to the city for a sports complex in North Grenada.
The new tax resulted in a total of two percent tax on food and alcohol at restaurants inside the city, and a three percent total tax on motels.
“This first check will be deposited into the special account for the Sports Complex and can only be used for design, construction and maintenance of the complex,” Worsham said. “Based on record setting trends, this number will only go higher.”
